The Golden Liquid

Type: Photography, drawing, film Super 8, installation

The Golden Liquid explores the theme of human milk, often referred to as the “liquid gold” of early childhood nutrition. In collaboration with researchers from the Department of Life Sciences at the University of Trieste, CIMA (Interdepartmental Center for Advanced Microscopy), and the Institute of Pathological Anatomy at Santa Maria della Misericordia Hospital in Udine, I investigated both the biochemical composition of my own milk and the emotional effects of prolonged breastfeeding.

This multimedia research includes: microscopic photographs of breast milk taken over a three-year period; close-up images of body parts involved in the practice; a Super 8 film (Last Milk, 2023) depicting the manual expression of the last drops of milk, presented with a deliberately amateur aesthetic; an installation, a relic of milk transformed into pearls through a freeze-drying process, and a graphic representation of eye-tracking data, mapping the micro-movements of the pupil as I recalled the first time my daughter latched onto the breast.

A distinctive feature of the project is the use of orotone printing (a photographic technique that produces silver gelatin positives on glass, backed with metallic pigment and 22-carat gold powder). This process was chosen for its golden, iridescent finish and its material connection to the scientific analysis of milk slides. The images are displayed on custom-made brass shelves, resembling small bars of pure gold.

While breastfeeding supports infant health and reduces reliance on formula — thereby decreasing environmental impact — I frame it as a practice that remains invisible in public discourse, yet highly regulated by socio-economic structures. Through this work, I aim to restore the psychological and physical well-being of the dyad — the nursing parent and the breastfed child — as the only essential condition.

What inspires you as an artist? Driven by political issues, I’m inspired by the intersection of art and science, participatory practices and interspecies perspectives. I aim to access realities far from my own experience.

What do you think is the purpose of art? I believe the purpose of art is to offer an alternative language through which we can read, question and engage with both human and non-human realities. Art has the potential to challenge prevailing narratives, amplify marginalised voices and cultivate critical thinking through collective reflection.
