The autumn in Estonia is a shade of golden, when leaves change the colour and start to cover the ground. This was the setting for the “Magic Carpets” platform’s Emerging Curators’ Capacity Building Programme, which took place in Tartu, Estonia on 24th and 25th October, 2024. Bringing together a dynamic group of curators from seventeen different European countries, the two-day programme featured a mix of presentations, workshops and site visits, all designed to engage curators in critical discussions about their practice and the legacy of the “Magic Carpets” platform.
The event kicked off with a thought-provoking presentation by Indra Lukošienė, a researcher with the “Magic Carpets” platform. She delved into research conducted in October 2022 that explored the evolving expectations and roles of curators within the platform. Through a series of reflective questions and insights, the researcher guided participants to think critically about their responsibilities as curators and the growing importance of community engagement in curatorial practice. This session set the tone for the rest of the programme, inviting curators to examine their own paths and contributions within the broader context of international cultural exchange.
Following the insightful presentation, the group participated in a series of interactive discussions and workshops moderated by Aistė Ptašinskaitė-Paukštė and Goda Kacilevičiūtė from Fluxus Labas! The first workshop focused on curators’ individual journeys with the “Magic Carpets” platform, providing a space for participants to reflect on their personal experiences, challenges, and growth within the network. Curators shared stories of their successes and setbacks, building a sense of solidarity and understanding within the group. Another discussion, encouraged participants to reflect on their past challenges and mistakes. Rather than shying away from difficult experiences, the group embraced the idea that these moments often lead to the most valuable learning opportunities. This open and honest dialogue allowed curators to explore the complexities of their roles and the importance of resilience in their practice.
The final day of the programme featured art space visits, offering participants the opportunity to experience Tartu’s vibrant artistic scene firsthand. Guided tours of the Tartu Artist House and Pallas Galerii allowed curators to explore local galleries and gain insights into the unique cultural dynamics of Tartu. These visits provided valuable context for curatorial practice, offering inspiration for future projects and collaborations.
As the programme concluded, participants left with a renewed sense of purpose and strengthened connections within the curatorial community. The “Magic Carpets” platform’s Emerging Curators’ Capacity Building Programme continues to be a key part of its mission to nurture the professional development of emerging cultural talents across Europe. By providing opportunities for reflection, dialogue and exchange, the platform remains committed to fostering a more inclusive, innovative and collaborative artistic landscape.
