Martina Farrugia

I am a multidisciplinary artist based between Malta and the Netherlands. With a background in art history, archaeology and digital art, my current artistic practice explores tangible cultural heritage and collective memory, translating my research and findings through various media. I am currently pursuing the Masters in Experimental Publishing at the Piet Zwart Institute, focusing on the exploration of accessible tools for publishing and archival practices.

Areas of interest: Archival practices, photography, ceramics, textiles, workshop programming.

What inspires you as an artist? I am very inspired by my previous education in Archaeology and History of Art, while also finding inspirations within the mediums I was brought up in, such as learning about textiles and beadwork from my grandmother and mother. These inspirations often find themselves collectively working together within my artistic practice.

What do you think is the purpose of art? I like to think that the purpose of art is there to make something public and to share that knowledge through visual narrative.
