Nicole Weniger by Petra Rainer

Nicole Weniger (Innsbruck, 1987) develops an artistic practice at the interface of photography, installation and performative gesture that negotiates questions of identity, belonging and spatial location. Her works are created in landscapes undergoing ecological, political or symbolic upheaval and rely on temporary interventions that combine documentary precision with narrative openness.

CYCLES

During her artistic residency in Guimarães, Nicole Weniger worked with photographies she took at the elderly home Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Guimarães and in textile industries of this area.

Looking close at the way the hands were touching the material, connecting threads, cutting fabrics, controlling quality with their touch.

With former workers of those factories she worked in a collaborative and inclusive way. She asked them to show their hand grips and work steps they did in their profession. Which were their favourite and least favourite ones? Working with these body memories, different fragments of movements and hand grips were composed together, constructing gestures with readable and non-readable meanings, open for new connections.
