Olga Budzan residency at WIK 2025 by Jerzy Wypych

Currently lives and works in: Wrocław, Poland

Practice: Making and teaching. Embroidery (white work, folk embroidery, cross stitch), bobbin lace, reconstructions of traditional Lower Silesian crafts

As an artist, I feel deeply connected to the region I live in. Trade routes have almost always intersected here. The ethnically diverse population exchanged experiences and influenced each other. The traditions of Lower Silesia inspire me. Working in the museum motivates me to learn about old, forgotten techniques. I admire the craftsmanship of old, anonymous creators of embroidery and lace. From the perspective of an artistically educated person, I wonder how old techniques can be used to say something new about the world. Today, craftsmanship has a completely different function than before. It no longer serves only beauty and decoration. It becomes one of the tools for commenting on the current social or political situation. I also want to build relationships between people with different artistic and life experience through joint work. For most of my professional life, I have focused on artistic animation. I convince people that craftsmanship is not reserved only for the most talented and gifted. During the workshops, I try to create a good, safe atmosphere. I am happy when my students “fly the nest”. They stop coming to classes and become independent creators. Embroidery and other “female” activities have ceased to be oppressive. Today, they are a way to manifest one’s thoughts, sensitivity and view of the world. There is a place for everyone at our embroidery table!

Areas of interest: Clash of old techniques with modern ideas.

Why are you a part of Magic Carpets: Magic Carpets gives a platform to artists interested in interacting with their surroundings, both with the urban fabric and with people. I like how Magic Carpets creates conditions for artists who are somehow excluded. So far, I have observed how residencies are conducted and the whole process seemed extremely inspiring and interesting to me.

Together with teenagers from a sociotherapeutic center, we created colouring books that we sold at local illustration and poster fairs. People usually do not associate troubled teens with relaxation. I wanted the youth’s work to help people relax. The colouring books in the form of a poster could be put together in such a way that they created an endless pattern. Through this activity, I showed the youth that thanks to their creativity, they can gain a profession that will give them freedom and satisfaction.
