Pedro Bastos

Recently, I have become aware that I don’t create anything, I just present things, the result of a process of work I continue that is part of my life — I have been interested in developing ideas from the environment that surrounds me, the whole process being more important than the end result. I systematically use the same media: 35mm film, painting, poetry & board journals, and video.

Areas of interest: Visual Arts, Film, Poetry

Why are you a part of MagiC Carpets: I was invited to be part of Contextile 2022 as a local resident artist, where I had the opportunity to develop a work based on the local memories of textile workers from Vale do Ave.

MagiC Carpets project

Memories of Luísa (fictional)

I worked with a collection of testimonies of former textile workers from Vale do Ave in a nursing home. From these memoirs, I turned to old and obsolete industrial silkscreen paintings of fabric printing and printed them together with the transcribed memories on large zinc plate surfaces. These large objects function as Mementos of a bankrupt industrial region.

Experimental Cinema

Film shot through Vale do Ave in 35mm, along the banks of polluted rivers in the region after 100 years of massive industry. It is an open work in constant mutation. It is an ode to the Valley.

What inspires you as an artist? I like to develop continuous work processes, presenting works that are open and in constant mutation from the individual and collective memory. Use painting, 35mm film and found objects as supports for my works. Document the entire process in logbooks for future editing, making my life an integral part of my work.

What do you think is the purpose of art? Fight against the oppression of a savage and oppressive capitalist system. Fight for the collective and individual freedom of all human beings oppressed by this self-destructive system.
