The happening Conversations with Fish connects food, archives, the past, the future and conversations between species. This happening is part of a research project, with the aim of opening a dialogue between the inhabitants of Jelsa and the fish that inhabit the sea around the island. By exploring the historical, economic and cultural connections between the island community and fish, questions of sustainability, work in tourism, community connections and relationships with nature are raised.
Artist(s): Laura Adel
Practice: Installation, 3D printing
In everyday language, we often say, “you’re as cold as stone.” Yet this phrase, on closer inspection, seems misleading. Examining a stone’s structure and colour reveals its rich mineral composition. The texture of its surface reflects the forces that shaped it: water smooths its edges, pressure causes fractures, and high temperatures leave it roughened. Each stone carries a record of Earth’s formative processes, the foundation of our present reality. Moreover, stone was humanity’s first tool, empowering us to shape our surroundings and create. At the same time, this tool warms under persistent touch, revealing its openness towards cooperation.
Why have you chosen to be a curator or why has curatorship chosen you? Having finished my MA in painting at the Fine Art Academy, I stood at the intersection of working with artists and being one myself. The former ended up having a stronger pull.
What do you think is the purpose of art? To uncover unspoken truths.
Your favourite film(s): Trainspotting by Danny Boyle
