Sara Dedić

I was born and raised in a small town near Novi Sad, and due to my studies in 2017, I moved to Novi Sad where I currently live and work at Novo Kulturno Naselje. I inherited my love and gift for art from my mother, who nurtured those tendencies in me throughout my childhood, so I have always felt like myself in that field. I finished my studies in Scenic Architecture, Technology and Design, and throughout my schooling, I worked on various projects that primarily dealt with the field of theatre and film. In the last two years, with Novo Kulturno Naselje, I started doing event management and discovered that this is my new passion! In addition to art, I have discovered myself in the field of stage technique and architecture. In my free time I love to spend time with my family and friends, also in my free time I do street art and photography.

Areas of interest: Art, stage technology, architecture.

Why are you a part of MagiC Carpets: MagiC Carpets is a great opportunity to meet and network with curators and artists from different parts of Europe and their cultures, ways of working and ideas. It is also a great opportunity to learn and gain new experience in a creative environment.

Past projects you are proud of (before MC)

Binacikl

The initiative was born in 2019 and within a year and a half, my colleagues from the faculty and myself have worked on this project so that it would be realised and set in December 2021. Binacikl is a hybrid stage and a bicycle parking facility set up in Novi Naselje, in the park “Among the birches”, which is one of the favorite places where members of this community gather. Over the years, at this location, the Novo Kulturno Naselje has been organising cultural and artistic events without any infrastructure. The choice of location followed after a detailed analysis of the spatial and social context and a dialogue with the representatives of local communities, where it turned out that this location is ideal due to its connection with a kindergarten, primary school, as well as the park “Among the birches”. The goal of this project is to provide new dimensions to one urban fragment, from practical application as a bicycle parking, to a kind of landmark, a gathering place. It is planned that the facility will be used regularly for organising educational and cultural events in order to promote sustainable development, art and civic activism therefore, Binacikl is the first step in the advanced infrastructure for such events in this part of Novi Sad. The project influences the arrangement of the part of the Novo Naselje inter-block space, which is given a new, arranged core, i.e. a place of gathering for citizens, activists, artists and others, which solves additional everyday problems for citizens – the lack of bicycle parking, the lack of safe space for young people, and platforms for education.

Why have you chosen to be a curator or why has curatorship chosen you? After working with young artists at the festival “The Welcome to Novo Naselje 8” last year, I realised that I want to do art not only from the perspective of an artist, but also as a someone who guides the artist through the creative process.

What do you think is the purpose of art? I would say that art doesn’t have a specific purpose, but it is one of the ways for a person to express himself, as well as a great way to criticise current topics and problems in a society, to raise awareness in the society (or at least to try) and lead to the critical thinking.
