Beyond What Drifts Us Apart in Malta

Beyond What Drifts Us Apart is an art event taking place in November 2023 in Malta. Opening November 25th and 26th, 2023 – 11 am – 4 pm at the peninsula of Qalet Marku Tower in Baħar ic-Caghaq, Malta.

Beyond What Drifts Us Apart is an interdisciplinary site-specific project developed and curated by Elyse Tonna which attempts to uncover the less dominant narratives associated with the environments surrounding historic coastal towers and the consequent relationships between the impacted landscapes and non-human communities. In 2023, the project will centre within and around the Qalet Marku Tower in Baħar ic-Caghaq in Malta, taking advantage of the relationship between them, and the rich ecosystems around them.

Beyond What Drifts Us Apart is a collaborative event of the Istanbul-based Mahalla Festival organized by the cultural organization Diyalog and Malta-based Unfinished Art Space, including site-specific artistic interventions, artists residencies and community-oriented activities.

The emerging artists Samuel Ciantar (MT), Fernando P Ferreira (PT),  Marija Rasa Kudabaite (LT) and Rakel Vella (MT) are participating in Beyond What Drifts Us Apart in the frame of the Magic Carpets. Charlene Galea (MT) and Alfred Graf (AT) are artists of the Mahalla Festival also taking part in the event.

Curator: Elyse Tonna

Artistic Director & Advisor: Sabine Büsch
